A Possible Reason For Bad Budgets

While House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero Jr. was speaking on the Connecticut House of Representatives floor on the topic of the state's budget Monday, two other Representatives were seen partaking in the favorite timewaster of fourth-graders everywhere. (You guessed it: Windows Solitiare!) They are both Democrats, and have been identified as Barbara Lambert and Jack Hennessy. They weren't the only ones, however: what looks to me like Pandora internet radio is playing on another's computer (near the center of the picture), while the Great American Pastime had also intruded into the room, as you can see on the bottom right of the photo. Another screen shows an email inbox. How much do these people get payed, again? No wonder our nation's finances are in the tank!

Thomas Foley, former ambassador to Ireland and Republican U.S. Senate hopeful (running against incumbent Christopher Dodd), has suggested a ban on laptops and BlackBerries during Congress' formal sessions. While it is widely believed that banning laptops would likely be counterproductive due to the volume of pertinent information they can retrieve, he aptly said the incident "has subjected our state legislature to national shame and controversy.''
