The Importance of Primaries

Tomorrow is Minnesota (my home state)'s primary. It comes earlier than last year's, in what seems to be a trend nationally. Colorado's is also tomorrow, as is Connecticut's. Nevada's was in June after the legislature there decided it was too hard to get voters motivated in the August heat.

The importance of primaries cannot be underestimated: through this process so idiosyncratic to our great republic, each party's birthright is given to their candidate who can get the most supporters to show up.

In the process of stopping career politicians, it could be said that no step is more important -- after all, incumbents' and first-time candidates' names are printed the same size on the ballot. However, many people do not attend their primary, so your ballot may carry a greater effect that you might think.

Please attend your primary. To do so is to exercise a special right of citizenship.
