Is Harry Reid Finished?

The debate continues as to whether Harry Reid is finished being a Senator; just after his prize piece of legislation - the infamous healthcare bill - cleared the Senate and House, a nugget of information came out of a recently published book: Reid made a racially charged attack on then-candidate Barack Obama, thus breaking the accepted code of conduct for his party at that time.

Reid's African-American supporters were planning a rally luncheon for tomorrow, but are now are considering what to do instead.

Republican Trent Lott committed a similar gaffe at a birthday party for Strom Thurmond in 2002, and his resignation was called for by Democrats (and also quite a few Republicans) right away.

So, the Democrats are in a tough spot. Do they ask for Reid's resignation, or do they turn a deaf ear to the proceedings, as has been done more than a few times in the 111th congress?

Reid is in an even tougher spot. He must know his time is running out, as his support is dwindling, and (I think) would almost surely be defeated come his re-election time in 2010 (due to the buyout of Sen. Nelson's vote during the healthcare decision). But if he resigns, he won't be able to see healthcare through. At any rate, he is running out of time.
