Jim DeMint Takes Applaudable Midterm Risks

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), enjoying a lead in his re-election race against Alvin Greene, is focusing his attention on other Senate races nationally.

Turning against the Republican party's popular picks, DeMint has worked to get conservative stalwarts  on the ballot in states where the Senate races are projected to be the hottest. His picks have been typically have voting records similar to his own -- a message of smaller government and fiscal frugality. National Public Radio has an expository article which details Sen. DeMint's strategic mission.

Senate races featuring longtime incumbents, such as Nevada's, where Sen. Harry Reid (D) is fighting to stay in the Senate after 23 years, may prove to be the most important this November. DeMint, along with his PAC, Senate Conservatives, have endorsed primary winner Sharon Angle (R) for that race.

The Wall Street Journal ran a good interview with Sen. DeMint in today's paper, and called him "the pre-eminent conservative in Congress."

I think Sen. DeMint is on to something -- and plenty of others must think so too. DeMint's PAC has received contributions from about 50,000 individuals. Even more importantly, I think he deserves the most credit for offering his own solutions and owning the risk. It beats going along with the party -- even on deciding other races, which is far from the charted waters of Senate campaigning.
